3. Historical and artistic tours<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n
\n\"Polizzi<\/a>Tour of the monuments and artistic heritage of Polizzi Generosa (4 km, 3 hours)<\/strong><\/p>\n

La Commenda: center of the Gerosolomitano religious order, it was the richest venue of the priory of Messina, on which it depended. It once included houses, fiefs and a mill, but today only picturesque ruins remain;<\/p>\n

Palazzo Carpinello: the palace, dominating the whole square, was the seat of the Regia Secrezia and it was the house of the barons Gagliardo of Carpinello;<\/p>\n

Collegio dei gesuiti: now seat of the City Hall, it is a single body with the Church of St Girolamo, the latter considered a masterpiece of the baroque artistic movement. The statues of Saint Vincenzo Ferreri del Quattrocchi, Madonna con Bambino (Holy Mary with Jesus) by Domenico Gagini are also valuable works of art;<\/p>\n

Mother Church and Flemish triptych: Also known as the church of S. Maria Maggiore, it dates back to the Norman era, under the Countess Adelasia. The church has been restored over the centuries. On the main altar, a statue of the Vergin by Giuliano Mancino dominates the church. Among the most valuable masterpieces, it is worth mentioning the statue of the Holy Mary with Jesus by Domenico Gagini on the left of the Notarbartolo chapel, as well as the monumental reliquary with the crucifix. The church is also enriched with different wooden statues by Quattrocchi. The elegant Chapel of St Gandolfo (saint patron of Polizzi, who died here in 1260) is a masterpiece of the church. The chapel houses the marble tomb of the saint, as well as the wonderful marble tryptic by Berrettaro and Del Mastro. The most important work of art of the church is the Flemish Triptych;<\/p>\n

\"Polizzi<\/a>Church of SanPancrazio: Once considered the spiritual center of the Byzantine community, the church preserves a gorgeous painting by Lo Zoppo di Gangi, featuring St Pancrazio and The Virgin. The church is surrounded by the ancient Torre di Leo, once a defense tower;<\/p>\n

The Castle: it was built by order of Roger the Norman but, after the 19th Century, the castle was gradually abandoned and then demolished. However, it is said that the ghost of queen Bianca still lives in the castle, glowing during full moon nights;<\/p>\n

Fonte Naftolia: The Greek fountain is dedicated to the nymph Thal\u00eca, mother of the Palici Gods. Ciceron mentioned them in the \u201cVerrine\u201d;<\/p>\n

Church of Santa Maria Lo Piano: the church was seat of the Senate of the city in the past. It is characterised by a wooden roof of Abies Nebrodensis and a Crucifix by the school of Padre Umile from Petralia;<\/p>\n

Church of Sant\u2019Antonio Abate: it was once a mosque. Inside the church, the painting of Saint Domenico by G.G. Lo Varchi and that of St Biagio by Lo Zoppo di Gangi are particularly interesting;<\/p>\n

Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie e Madonna addolorata (Moder of Sorrows). The amazing Madonna wearing a handmade, precious veil and gown by the stilist Domenico Dolce is absolutely a sight to see.<\/p>\n
